Most garage door problems can wait for a scheduled repair. A few situations can't — either because they're a security risk or because a car or person is stuck. Here's how to handle the most common emergencies safely.
Car trapped inside or outside
If the opener won't respond, look for the manual release cord — usually a red-handled rope hanging from the trolley on the opener's rail. Pulling it disconnects the door from the opener so it can be moved by hand. Only do this if the door is fully down or you can support its weight — a partially open door disconnected mid-travel can drop suddenly. If the door feels heavy or won't move smoothly by hand, stop; that usually means a spring or cable issue, not just an opener problem, and forcing it is how injuries happen.
Door stuck wide open — a security risk
An open garage that won't close is an immediate security and weather concern, especially overnight. If the manual release and manual operation don't get it closed safely, the practical short-term fix is physically blocking or securing the opening (a car parked in the doorway, a temporary barrier) while you arrange for a same-day technician, rather than leaving it open indefinitely.
Door stuck closed
- Check the basics first: opener power, breaker, remote batteries, and whether the sensors are blocked or misaligned
- If the door won't budge by hand either, do not force it — a door that resists manual movement is almost always a spring, cable, or track issue
- If a car is trapped inside and the situation isn't urgent (no immediate need to leave), it's safer to wait for a technician than to force a heavy door
When to call immediately vs. when it can wait
Call right away for: a car trapped with an urgent need to leave, a door stuck open overnight, or any sign of a broken spring or cable. It can typically wait for a scheduled appointment if the door is simply slow, noisy, or intermittently glitchy but still closes and secures the garage. Since we don't offer repair service ourselves, a licensed repair technician is the right call for true emergencies — but if the emergency turns out to be the sign of a door that's simply worn out, our wizard gives you an exact installed replacement price in about two minutes, so you have a real number ready once the immediate issue is handled.
