What you're actually paying for
Insulated doors use a sandwich construction — steel skins with a foam core (usually polystyrene or polyurethane) between them — instead of a single sheet of steel. That construction is more expensive to manufacture, adds R-value (insulating power), and also makes the door noticeably quieter and more dent-resistant than a single-layer steel door.
When insulation is clearly worth it
- The garage is attached to the house and shares a wall with living space
- The garage is used as a workshop, gym, or heated/cooled space
- You're in a climate with real winter cold or summer heat — insulation cuts temperature swings noticeably
- You want a quieter door — the foam core dampens sound from opening/closing and outside noise
When you can reasonably skip it
A detached garage used purely for storage or parking, in a mild climate, with no shared wall to living space, is the clearest case where a non-insulated door is a defensible way to save a few hundred dollars without giving up much in practice.
